Over the last few decades, refrigerators haven't changed all that much in one key area -- shape. Sure, the hulking mass of steel keeps our perishables fresh while boasting improved efficiency and other bells and whistles, but it's still just a big block that takes up a considerable amount of space in the kitchen.

Concept products such as the Impress refrigerator by Massey University industrial design student Ben de la Roche of New Zealand could influence the way future iceboxes keep food and drinks cool.

Instead of the conventional cooling cube, Impress adapts its refrigeration to the content within. A honeycomb layout of sliding pins allows the user to insert food, containers, and drinks into the futuristic refrigerator individually. This in turn gives a massive boost to efficiency, as Impress only chills the items that occupy the pins. In theory, aside from using less electricity, Impress would also use less harmful gases (CFCs) to chill items.

de la Roche submitted the idea to the 2012 Electrolux Design Lab competition and qualified as a finalist, beating out more than 1,200 submissions from aspiring designers. He presents the idea to a panel of Electrolux judges in Milan, Italy, on October 25.

The Princess Compact4All kitchen appliances (available this month) come together to form a "breakfast cube." Designed by Jan des Bouvrie for the Dutch firm Princess Household Appliances, the four countertop appliances each measures 20 centimeters cubed. (To American countertops, that would be 7.87 inches all around.) Composed of a juicer, a kettle, a toaster, and a coffeemaker, the modular set can be stacked together or moved about the kitchen just like any other appliance.

Sometimes finding the unexpected in a collection of appliances only involves putting them all together. In this case, the juicer hides a secret. Acting as the central figure in the set, the juicer has three plug sockets (220 to 240 volts) for which the other appliances could be plugged into. The set forms a cohesive whole not only in styling and design but also in utility.

Since this is breakfast we're talking about here, the merging of form and function is of no small importance; foggy mornings become clear when everything comes together. Facilitating this transition into the day are standard features one would expect to see in such a collection of appliances: yes, the toaster has browning control; yes, the coffeemaker has a removable water reservoir; yes, the kettle is cordless. But it's the cool efficiency and fun design that comes together to not only create a smooth breakfast experience, but to give it a whole new shape, too.

Fondue is fun. Toasters often get overlooked in the kitchen. Counter space, being the limited creature that it is, has room for only so many appliances. While this may bode well for strong multitaskers like toaster ovens, regular toasters often get left out in the cold. (Or at least left in the back of the cupboard.)

The KitchenAid Pro Line Toaster ($299) aims to elevate the once-grand appliance back out from under the counter. Sensing that there is only one direction to go but up, the toaster rises to new heights by incorporating a motorized lifting mechanism. Not afraid to dunk below the surface, the gadget also senses when bread is placed in the slots and automatically lowers the slices to initiate toasting.

Despite their diminishing numbers, or perhaps because of it, higher-end features in toasters have a market. Here, the body features heavy-duty die-cast aluminum construction and, of course, the slots are wide enough for thick-sliced breads or bagels. A defrost function is helpful for dealing with frozen goods, while an LED timer displays toasting progress. Additionally (and this is perhaps the neatest feature of all), the toaster has a keep-warm setting that automatically kicks in after the bread has been toasted, keeping the item butter-ready for up to 3 minutes -- because sometimes in the rush of the morning, even the toast itself can get overlooked.

Twiztt solves a cookware puzzle

Cookware can be deceptively simple. Deceptive, because it usually is simple. But then something comes along and adds another piece to the puzzle. Then another. Eventually, a set of interlocking pieces comes together, promising to do anything and everything. The problem is, sometimes when things get too complicated, their original utility gets lost in the fold.

Not so with the Twiztt by Joan Lunden Cut, Cook & Serve Set ($79.99). Like a puzzle, the set of kitchenware comes together to form something greater than the sum of its parts. As the name implies, the multitasking set goes from prepping to cooking duties, finally ending up on the table. But where it really shines is in its interconnectibility.

The parts work together with each of the four pieces designed to play well with others. Included in the set is a cutting board, a melamine bowl, a ceramic, nonstick stainless-steel skillet and a lid with adjustable steam release knob. The convergence of form and function continues with fun details that any cook would enjoy: the cutting board features a cut-out for easy scrap disposal, the lid locks into place for easy straining, and a neat measurement guide is included directly on the cutting board.

Now if it can only solve the puzzle of what to make for dinner.

Kenwood Cooking Chef now available in the U.S.

Way back in October 2009, I wrote about the Kenwood Cooking Chef. The device has finally made it to the U.S. What sort of gadget is this machine that has taken so long to grace our shores? Well, the answer appears to be more of what it isn't as opposed to what it is.

Combining a stand mixer with an induction plate, the multitasking appliance carves out a new niche on the countertop. By allowing chefs to cook directly in the work bowl, the Kenwood Cooking Chef offers a new way to operate in the kitchen.

The highly precise induction heating element has a range of 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 284 degrees Fahrenheit and is designed to be put to use while the appliance is in use. The end result is that soup, pasta, rice dishes and more can be simultaneously cooked and mixed at the same time. But that is only the start.

In addition to the accessories one would expect to find with a stand mixer (like a dough hook, whisk, and stirring tool), the appliance also comes with attachments allowing it to be used as a blender and a food processor. The one appliance can literally handle everything from making soup to chopping nuts.

Has it been worth the wait? Well, that depends. At a price of just about two grand, this overachieving appliance is pretty much designed for the person who has everything. Then again, for the person who has everything, maybe all they need is an appliance that actually does everything. Either way, perhaps it's best to check back in another three years to see if it has become a little more affordable.
