Illuminated range hood reaches the ceiling

Where there is smoke, there is light.

Where there is smoke, there is light.

(Credit:Grup Frecan)

Crowded kitchens create interesting conundrums. Finding the perfect balance between essential devices and cosmetic touches can be tricky and relies upon a certain hierarchy unique to kitchen appliances and gadgets. Most people would probably agree that the stove and the refrigerator top the list of essentials; it's hard to not work around these two behemoths of the kitchen. But when it comes time to place the next piece of the puzzle, rarely does one next look up.

Installing into the kitchen ceiling, the Frecan Paradigma (Spanish site) is a combination range hood/lighting system that puts a previously under-utilized area to double-duty use. Each lighting fixture contains an individual extraction system that then meets up behind the scenes to draw steam and smoke out of the kitchen. A remote allows users to control the kitchen accessory -- no step stool necessary.

The ceiling may provide a nice wide open expanse that may play a nice counterpoint to crowded countertops, but usually it does little to add utility to the busiest room in the house. Thinking outside the box (or in this case, inside the box), the smooth and elegant functional design of this range hood puts things in a different light. As for the new hierarchy that gets created by this combination device, well, it's hard to argue against the ceiling being on the top.

Boba Fett KitchenAid mixer, for a bounty of baked goods

Boba Fett kitchen mixer

Cookie dough had better watch out. Boba Fett is coming.

(Credit:tommyfilth)

Not a long time ago, in a kitchen far, far away, there sits a KitchenAid mixer, the likes of which the galaxy has never seen. DeviantArtist tommyfilth perfectly melded the look of "Star Wars" bounty hunter Boba Fett with a kitchen appliance normally associated with Food Network shows rather than sci-fi.

We know what bad "Star Wars" kitchen appliances look like (hello, Nestle coffee maker). Leave it up to an independent artist to get it right. I would put tommyfilth's Boba Fett mixer in my kitchen in a heartbeat. It shows that "Star Wars" cooking implements can really work.

There's a little story behind this impressive creation. Tommyfilth asked his wife to get him a broken KitchenAid mixer on eBay for Christmas. He wanted to refurbish it himself. Once he had it apart, inspiration struck as to how to approach a new paint job for the machine. A Boba Fett mixer was born.

The mixer is painted with spray paint from the home improvement store and is sealed with engine enamel to hold up to the rigors of mixing pound cake and stirring cookie dough. Just don't let it get too close to your Darth Vader toaster. Those two can't be trusted together.

Breville immersion blender thinks like a food processor

Keep it together with the Breville All-In-One Immersion Blender and Food Processor.

Keep it together with the Breville All-In-One Immersion Blender and Food Processor.

(Credit:Sur La Table)

Every kitchen needs a set of tools. Sometimes, that just means a bowl or plate and the microwave. (An eating utensil might come in handy, too.) Other times, it seems that meal preparation requires every kitchen tool in the house. In any event, to keep things mixing, chopping, slicing and blending smoothly, it's important to have the right tool for the job. Or in this case, all of the tools.

The Breville All-In-One Immersion Blender and Food Processor ($199) combines the versatility of a food processor with the convenience of a stick blender. An evolution from Breville's Control Grip set, the new device adds a feed tube to the food processor work bowl, allowing it to more closely mimic a traditional unit.

Included in the set are a variety of prep tools designed to tackle any number of cooking tasks -- from quick microwave meals to multi-ingredient masterpieces. In addition to the variable speed control offered by the 280-watt motor, the kitchen gadget comes with a 6-cup processing bowl. Attachments include a standard blending wand, a reversible shredding disc, an adjustable slicing disc, a masher, a whisk, and an S-blade. The compact design and easy operation bring it all together, allowing for quick use for whatever is on the menu.

Search no more for hot dogs with this countertop steamer

Every kitchen should have a hot dog drawer.

Every kitchen should have a hot dog drawer.

(Credit:Amazon)

The kitchen cupboard is a portal that can lead to many great discoveries. However, the kitchen doesn't always have to be about exploration. Sometimes, it is a simple, everyday favorite that calls out to our stomachs. A go-to meal is after all, a meal to go to without hesitation. But for that, of course, you need a drawer full of hot dogs.

The methods employed to make a batch of hot dogs at home can range from the deceptively simple to the downright outrageous. However, even if you want it plain or if you prefer it to be a complicated tower of condiments (mustard, onions, jalapeo, bacon, sauerkraut), what really matters is if it is there and ready when you need it. Indeed, hot dogs on demand could be a considered essential kitchen necessity. (Well, maybe for some.) In any event, the Hot Dog Steamer CuiZen ST-1412 by EZGuardZ ($99.99) is here to help make that dream become a reality.

Regardless of its complicated name, the hot dog gadget is as straightforward as it gets: add water, put the dogs in the lower compartment and add buns to the top when necessary. That's all it takes to have a drawer full of hot dogs in waiting. Sure, you could use the appliance to steam food other than hot dogs, but this isn't about versatility here; this is about hot dogs. Then again, it does ship with a "Hot Dogs of the World" recipe book, so maybe that kitchen cupboard will hold a few surprises after all.

Four-door Samsung fridge adds SodaStream

The Samsung RF31FMESBSR Refrigerator bubbles the fridge door forward with an integrated SodaStream dispenser.

(Credit:Samsung)

The refrigerator door has long been a source for inspiration. On the inside, condiments line up and stand guard over the contents on the shelves. Pressed into action, they are ready at a moment's notice to be squeezed, squirted, and spread all over any meal any time of the day. But it is more than Sriracha and mayo that the fridge door has to offer. On the outside, there's a whole other world to explore. Now, with carbonated water.

The Samsung RF31FMESBSR 36" Four-Door Refrigerator with SodaStream dispenser takes tricked-out refrigerators to a bubbly, new level. Hiding among to-do notes and the kids' artwork lies an almost ordinary-looking water dispenser. The difference, however, is that this one is powered by SodaStream, makers of the popular countertop appliance designed to offer an alternative to cans and bottles of soda.

The automatic sparkling water dispenser allows for three levels of carbonation originating from a standard SodaStream 60L CO2 cylinder that is accessible through a concealed area inside of the left refrigerator door. Of course, users can still select still water or (very still) ice from the same control area. The new, dynamic SodaStream option for the 30.5 cu. ft. Samsung Four-Door Refrigerator will be available in April for an MSRP of $3,899 and continues the long-standing tradition of getting more out of the refrigerator door.

Bodum bounces clear into baking

Even with a clear transparent top, the Bodum stand mixer stands out.

Even with a clear transparent top, the Bodum stand mixer stands out.

(Credit:Bodum)

Kitchen appliances for generations have been sleek, shiny things not designed to particularly appeal to our senses as much as to convey a sense of almost clinical utility. The hearth of the home, being what it is -- a place of warmth and sustenance -- has in recent years seen a growing trend of kitchen gear and gadgets being more colorful than shiny. Bright splashes of color appeal to a broad range of consumers, but sometimes it is the complete lack of color that offers something more.

The Bodum Bistro 5-Quart Capacity Electric Stand Mixer ($400) updates a kitchen classic with a modern design. Featuring a clear, transparent rounded top, the stand mixer adds an element of intrigue to a time-honored kitchen essential. True to Bodum's style, the body housing is rubber-sprayed and available in a variety of bright colors meant to add a unique texture into any kitchen.

Complete with a beater, a dough hook, and a whisk, the set of included attachments lets home bakers put the kitchen to good use. Considering the amount of baked goods that can be made with the one appliance, that could mean a lot of cookies and cake in the near future. How it stands up to the classic examples of stand mixers (read: the KitchenAid) remains to be seen, but those looking to bounce their kitchen in a new direction may want to take note.

Mood lighting to cook by

The Faber Arkea range hood is a stylish choice, lights on or off.

The Faber Arkea range hood is a stylish choice, lights on or off.

(Credit:Faber)

Dining can be a delicate thing. Finding the right balance of flavors and ingredients can be tricky, but the meal is only half the story. Surrounding whatever food is on the plate, of course, is the environment. The setting could be anything from the soft glow of a candlelight dinner to the bright glare of a midday meal. Or, it could be any number of options dialed up from the range hood. Yes, that oft-overlooked thing above the stovetop.

The color of meal-making can now be controlled with the Arkea range hood made by the European firm Faber. The striking hood makes a big first impression with its stark, spherical design. However, it's when the lights go dim that the kitchen accessory really shines. Hidden inside, there lies a series of LEDs capable of illuminating the kitchen in the lighting scheme of your choice.

From energetic red to cool violet (as well as what lies between), the kitchen hood is designed to make an impression. It's not fearful of utility, however; the range hood makes sure it can get the job done, no matter the presentation. Featuring operation via remote control, the range hood can be raised or lowered at the press of a button. In addition to its ability to vent steam and smoke away from the stovetop, the hood features four white spotlights to illuminate the actual cooking area. No matter what happens to end up on the plate, with the range hood's combination of style and functionality, it will certainly form a complete meal.

Charge your phone with a cold beer

Epiphany One Puck

From cold drink to charged phone.

(Credit:Epiphany Labs)

The Epiphany One Puck may well be the world's most awesome coaster. It may also be the most useful. The One Puck doesn't just protect your coffee table from drink sweat, it also charges up your smartphone.

You don't have to plug the Puck into an outlet. It uses a small Stirling engine to provide the power. The device has two sides, one red and one blue. Place a hot drink on the red side, or a cold drink on the blue side.

Stirling engines have been around since the 1800s. They work by turning heat disparities into energy. Epiphany Labs has built a working prototype of its One Puck, though the company is still vague on just how long it takes for the device to charge up a phone. There are a lot of variables at play, including how hot or cold the source is.

Any source of heat that can fit on the Puck will work, though I don't know how much energy a warm cat would produce. It works best with something that's very warm (like a steaming cup of tea) or very cold (like a frosty brewski).

Epiphany is aiming to raise $100,000 on Kickstarter to turn the prototype into a gadget that can be mass-manufactured. As development continues, hopefully we'll get more details on how the Stirling engine technology has been adapted and how long it will take to charge devices. The expected delivery date for the pledge Pucks isn't until March of 2014.

Early birds can still get in on a $99 pledge price. The regular pledge for a Puck is $115. It's not as slim as most phone chargers, but it is portable enough to throw into a purse or briefcase for those times when an electrical outlet isn't convenient, but an ice cold lager is.

Hamilton Beach Bowl Scraper Food Processor lends a hand

A built-in bowl scraper moves things along.

A built-in bowl scraper moves things along.

(Credit:Hamilton Beach)

Cooking is an action sport. Oh sure, there are plenty of options for those who go the less dynamic route, but when it comes to prepping ingredients, activity is usually necessary. Certainly kitchen gadgets do their best to make life easier for those who choose to chop, slice, and dice, yet still there usually remains a need for direct involvement from the chef. Sometimes, however, it is the smallest of features on a gadget or appliance that lends the biggest hand.

The Hamilton Beach 70730 Bowl Scraper Food Processor ($49.99) is like having a third (blade-proof) hand in the kitchen. The simple contraption rests on top of the central blade shaft and features three arms that slide along the inside of the bowl, scraping away foods that so like to hide from the two-speed (plus pulse) spinning blades. True to the great tradition of food prep, the scraping mechanism is operated manually via a lever on top, so active chefs needn't worry that their actions aren't involved.

Convenience is all nice and good, but what really matters is if said kitchen appliance can get the job done. This handy little appliance features a 450-watt motor, a 10-cup capacity, and comes complete with a chopping blade and slicing/shredding disc. And as for that feeling of satisfaction that comes from creating a well-made meal, don't forget to give yourself a hand.

Dyson's new $1,500 Airblade Tap tested in hands-on video

(Credit:Dyson)

Dyson, eh? The company is best known for making weird-looking vacuum cleaners and high-velocity hand dryers. So what's the British firm's next invention? Well, to paraphrase the great Admiral Ackbar, it's a tap!

Yes indeed, we've gone hands-on (or should that be under?) with Dyson's Airblade Tap -- a ludicrously pricey new piece of bathroom furniture. Click play on the video below to see what it looks like in reality.

This is not just any tap, dear reader. It washes your hands automatically after you've triggered an infrared sensor, then dries them using these air-blasting prongs on the side.

Beneath the surface, the tap is powered by a brand-new Dyson digital motor, which spins up to 90,000rpm a second. Dyson says the motor took seven years to develop, at a cost of nearly $50 million. Was it money well spent? Read more of Crave UK's hands-on test to find out.

The beverage pitcher that works for you

Interchangeable parts let the Primula Infuser Pitcher create any number of homemade beverages with a minimum of hassle.

Interchangeable parts let the Primula Infuser Pitcher create any number of homemade beverages with a minimum of hassle.

(Credit:Macy's)

Not all kitchen gadgets are gleaming devices shimmering with moving parts. Sometimes, utility is provided by something just sitting there minding its own business. Take tea, for example: not much goes on while it steeps. Another example might be ice chilling down a beverage. Finally in a trifecta of passivity, infusions require little more than placing a bunch of sliced fruits, herbs, and whatnot into a liquid. Considering the simplicity involved, it only makes sense that there would be one kitchen helper designed to do all three of these tasks.

The Primula Flavor It Beverage System 3-in-1 Infuser Pitcher, which retails for $45, is a simple device designed to brew, chill, or infuse. Creating the perfect beverage requires little more than switching among the three interchangeable inserts. The tea core includes a fine mesh screen to be used with loose-leaf tea or ground coffee, while the fruit infuser core can be used not only to flavor water with sliced fruit but could also be used in tandem with the tea insert so as to create homemade flavored tea. Finally, rounding out the BPA-free pitcher is the chill core, which is filled with a nontoxic gel. Just keep this part in the freezer and after letting the pitcher do all the work brewing and infusing, pop it in, sit back and continue relaxing with drink in hand.
