Coffee in the morning is no small matter. Decisions get made while sipping the caffeinated brew, decisions that shape the day. Like an architect, we construct plans, piece by piece, layer by layer, until a form emerges. Of course, that usually doesn't involve the actual coffee cup. But then again, who is to say it cannot?

The ThinkGeek Build-On Brick Mug ($19.99) is a coffee mug designed to appeal to designers of all ages. The interactive mug invites users to fiddle with it, stacking popular parts onto their own creations. Exactly what those popular parts might be is, of course, of utmost importance; the last thing anybody wants to do is wrestle with their morning beverage.

Rest assured, the mug is compatible with Lego, PixelBlocks, Mega Bloks, Kre-O, or K'Nex Bricks. The mug itself doesn't come with any bricks; it's strictly BYOB.

Mornings become more inviting (heck, make that any time of day) with this fun coffee mug, but it is not all fun and games. Some might say that without a cup of coffee in hand, nothing would ever get accomplished. Then again, that depends on what is to be accomplished. If building a city or a space station is on the list, then there is a good chance the project will be completed before it is time for a refill.

Crowded kitchens create interesting conundrums. Finding the perfect balance between essential devices and cosmetic touches can be tricky and relies upon a certain hierarchy unique to kitchen appliances and gadgets. Most people would probably agree that the stove and the refrigerator top the list of essentials; it's hard to not work around these two behemoths of the kitchen. But when it comes time to place the next piece of the puzzle, rarely does one next look up.

Installing into the kitchen ceiling, the Frecan Paradigma (Spanish site) is a combination range hood/lighting system that puts a previously under-utilized area to double-duty use. Each lighting fixture contains an individual extraction system that then meets up behind the scenes to draw steam and smoke out of the kitchen. A remote allows users to control the kitchen accessory -- no step stool necessary.

The ceiling may provide a nice wide open expanse that may play a nice counterpoint to crowded countertops, but usually it does little to add utility to the busiest room in the house. Thinking outside the box (or in this case, inside the box), the smooth and elegant functional design of this range hood puts things in a different light. As for the new hierarchy that gets created by this combination device, well, it's hard to argue against the ceiling being on the top.

Not a long time ago, in a kitchen far, far away, there sits a KitchenAid mixer, the likes of which the galaxy has never seen. DeviantArtist tommyfilth perfectly melded the look of "Star Wars" bounty hunter Boba Fett with a kitchen appliance normally associated with Food Network shows rather than sci-fi.

We know what bad "Star Wars" kitchen appliances look like (hello, Nestle coffee maker). Leave it up to an independent artist to get it right. I would put tommyfilth's Boba Fett mixer in my kitchen in a heartbeat. It shows that "Star Wars" cooking implements can really work.

There's a little story behind this impressive creation. Tommyfilth asked his wife to get him a broken KitchenAid mixer on eBay for Christmas. He wanted to refurbish it himself. Once he had it apart, inspiration struck as to how to approach a new paint job for the machine. A Boba Fett mixer was born.

The mixer is painted with spray paint from the home improvement store and is sealed with engine enamel to hold up to the rigors of mixing pound cake and stirring cookie dough. Just don't let it get too close to your Darth Vader toaster. Those two can't be trusted together.

The Samsung RF31FMESBSR 36" Four-Door Refrigerator with SodaStream dispenser takes tricked-out refrigerators to a bubbly, new level. The Epiphany One Puck may well be the world's most awesome coaster. It may also be the most useful. The One Puck doesn't just protect your coffee table from drink sweat, it also charges up your smartphone.

You don't have to plug the Puck into an outlet. It uses a small Stirling engine to provide the power. The device has two sides, one red and one blue. Place a hot drink on the red side, or a cold drink on the blue side.

Stirling engines have been around since the 1800s. They work by turning heat disparities into energy. Epiphany Labs has built a working prototype of its One Puck, though the company is still vague on just how long it takes for the device to charge up a phone. There are a lot of variables at play, including how hot or cold the source is.

Any source of heat that can fit on the Puck will work, though I don't know how much energy a warm cat would produce. It works best with something that's very warm (like a steaming cup of tea) or very cold (like a frosty brewski).

Epiphany is aiming to raise $100,000 on Kickstarter to turn the prototype into a gadget that can be mass-manufactured. As development continues, hopefully we'll get more details on how the Stirling engine technology has been adapted and how long it will take to charge devices. The expected delivery date for the pledge Pucks isn't until March of 2014.

Early birds can still get in on a $99 pledge price. The regular pledge for a Puck is $115. It's not as slim as most phone chargers, but it is portable enough to throw into a purse or briefcase for those times when an electrical outlet isn't convenient, but an ice cold lager is.

Dyson, eh? The company is best known for making weird-looking vacuum cleaners and high-velocity hand dryers. So what's the British firm's next invention? Well, to paraphrase the great Admiral Ackbar, it's a tap!

Yes indeed, we've gone hands-on (or should that be under?) with Dyson's Airblade Tap -- a ludicrously pricey new piece of bathroom furniture. Click play on the video below to see what it looks like in reality.

This is not just any tap, dear reader. It washes your hands automatically after you've triggered an infrared sensor, then dries them using these air-blasting prongs on the side.

The evolution of the toaster has not been one without its surprises. Imagine the shock of the first individual who discovered that it was possible to not only toast a slice of bread, but also reheat a slice of pizza in one of those new-fangled toaster ovens. Not surprisingly, countertop cooking has not been the same since.Nowadays, toasters, toaster ovens and the like have become sophisticated pieces of gadgetry that can cook everything from a whole pizza to rotisserie chicken. January is a time of renewal. It also happens to be when appliance makers show off their visions of what is to come. The event is CES 2013 and this year, according to those that make kitchen gadgets and appliances, everything is going to be very, very smart. While we have been promised automated kitchens in one form or another since the time of the Jetsons, there is one important factor in the modern world that may see the smart kitchen finally grow up: mobility.

The year 2013 is going to be one marked by plenty of smartphone and tablet sales. All those mobile devices are going to need something to control. Like what's for dinner.

All cooking consists of a step-by-step process; a process that lends itself remarkably well to being transcribed as a set of directions. Having these recipes readily available (not to mention with enhanced content) has become an enticing reality for phones and tablets. Perhaps the next step in the process is the integration of technology into the cooking device itself. Look for the Dacor Wall Oven with Discovery IQ Controller for Android to land sometime in summer 2013. Not only will the oven be able to tell you what's for dinner, but also how to cook it. Belkin's existing WeMo technology, app development, and cloud server allows for JCS to bring familiar products to market quickly and easily. Look for the first of these to be available later this year.

Smartphones and tablets have certainly changed how we view and interact with the world around us. Now, they look to transform the hearth of the home. With real steps being taken to that future throughout the year, 2013 looks to be the year when long promised smart features finally come home.
