Contrary to common perception, New Year's resolutions do not actually start on January 1. The idea is instead created some time between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. The art of roasting a bird with a flashlight requires much more than the typical yellow shiner found at your parent's house; in fact, you need something more than a hundred times more powerful.

While we don't know exactly how many exact lumens -- a standard of measurement used for lighting (where 1 lumen usually equals the power of one candle) -- you need accomplish the zany task, we do know through an informative YouTube video that cooking a turkey with a flashlight is possible.

Food generally isn't too big of a deal in the "Star Trek" universe unless you're talking about tribbles eating all the quadrotriticale or Picard ordering up a hot cup of tea to go with his space scones.

All those Enterprise crew members still have to eat and that means there's going to be some hot food coming out of the replicators. That also means you're going to need a space-worthy oven mitt. The ability to reach out and pluck fruits and vegetables off of a nearby branch, for many, is an unrealistic dream. Yet fresh food that is grown nearby continues to be a desirable commodity. As well it should; food that is fresh is far superior to that which has been hanging around during transport or otherwise. As delicious as freshly picked food may be, the hurdle of actually growing it is not one to be ignored. Unless of course, the whole process is automated.

Perhaps more so than any other single fruit, vegetable, or herb, garlic gets its own dedicated gadgets. It should probably not come as much of a surprise that garlic has demanded so much attention. Fat-blocking Pepsi a slimming soda in Japan

It sounds like a dieter's dream. Drink soda and lose weight. It's junk food with a healthy sheen and it's a real Pepsi product coming out in Japan.

Pepsi Special is special because of an added ingredient: dextrin, the same stuff found in Benefiber. It's a water-soluble fiber supplement that may also have some extracurricular effects with feelings of fullness and a reduction in fat absorption.

According to a study published in Appetite in 2011, soluble fiber dextrin increased participants' sense of satiety and decreased the amount of energy absorbed from the next meal. How that finding translates to a dextrin-charged soda is up for discussion.

Pepsi Special will get a nationwide release in Japan on November 13, and it's unlikely to be a big hit with the Sumo community. The advertising materials promise it will have a crisp and refreshing Pepsi flavor that hides the fibery aspects of the drink. There is no mention yet of how many calories it contains. A bottle will sell for just under $2.

Government-approved fat-blocking sodas are a recent development in Japan. Another dextrin soda called Kirin Mets Cola came out earlier this year after receiving clearance from the Japan Health Food & Nutrition Food Association. Pepsi Special has attained the same official "Foods for Specified Health Uses" designation. I guess that means soda pop can qualify as a health food.

Japan's reputation as country of thin people makes it a curious choice for an anti-fat-absorption drink, but perhaps it's just a test run before reaching out to the soda-slurping American market. Of course, we can't help but wonder: what would Michael Bloomberg say?

Latest entry into the great non-ice drink-chilling race

The election may be over, but that doesn't have to mean the end of competition. In fact, in at least one area of kitchen concerns, there exists a race that is still heating up. Or in this case, chilling down.

Perhaps it's seemed like there has recently been an influx of non-water ice drink chillers. It has not been your imagination. Water ice may still be the most effective chiller, but the fact that it dilutes as it chills is, for many, is an issue. The recent past has seen an emerging trend in that now drinking chillers can come in all shapes and forms. They are available as stainless steel cubes, cut sea stones, or for the more traditionally minded as regular water ice chillers -- albeit in sphere form. And then there is the latest entry into the race: the Soireehome Tilt Beverage Chilling Sphere ($17.99).

Given the opportunity to take the drink chillers for a test-drive, I popped a couple of the spheres into the freezer to give them a good chill. As a side effect of reading too much Hunter S. Thompson, Election Day seemed like the perfect opportunity to try the drink accessories. Oh, the things I do for this blog.

After choosing an appropriate libation and settling in to watch the returns, it quickly became apparent where the name of the drink chillers came from. The Tilt is constructed of sealed stainless steel and has a liquid center; when tilted back in the glass, the off-balance sphere tries to rotate the other direction. Very cool. Obviously, if tilted too far, the spheres will roll out, but for normal sipping leverage, this new candidate plays it safe. It just looks like you'll go over the edge knocking back of chilled glass of whiskey with a stainless steel contrivance rolling around inside; reality, as always, is different.

For those who prefer precise control over their chilling choices, the Tilt comes with a retrieving rod (which conveniently doubles as a swizzle stick) that hooks into a hinged dimple to pluck the sphere out of the drink with. Talk about embracing the issues; this little drink accessory chills beverages without watering them down and allows for them to be overloaded (or not) with garnishes. Something for everybody. And with a stainless steel construction, it will be sure to last longer than four years.
