The turning of the seasons signifies a time of change. Yet just because the weather will soon start to turn cool, doesn't mean it's time to toast adieu to chilled wine.

The Cork Pops VinOice Wine Chiller uses a gel-filled stainless steel chilling rod to cool down open bottles. It doesn't need to be removed to pour a glass since a gravity-hinged lid covers a pour spout that is attached to the chill rod, so wine can be served without the need to mess around with any wet accessories.

To use, the chilling rod should be placed in the freezer for 30 minutes or so. When it's time to crack a bottle open, a bit of wine should be removed (i.e. consumed) to make room for the chiller. The pourer and the chill rod are designed to be separated, so an additional rod kept in the freezer can be ready to use at a moment's notice. Anyone who has ever used a measuring cup knows that they like to lie. Well, maybe not lie so much as distort the truth. That is, unless one lifts it up to eye level, the reading might not be so accurate. Attempts have been made to rectify this issue and include enhancements such as angled measuring cups (Oxo) or measuring cups with a scale built in. Steampunk coffeemaker comes home

Certain descriptive words tend to get overused. Do an eBay search for vintage or retro and that becomes all too clear. Another label that gets applied all over the place is steampunk. Sometimes one can even see it applied to things that plug into the wall. For those who fancy technology from the Victorian or Edwardian eras, that is probably not what they have in mind.

Ancient tech comes at a price, and in this case that price is $699.95. Inspired by a coffee-brewing process invented by Loeff of Berlin in the 1830s, the Genuine Balancing Siphon Coffee Maker is an old-timey delight that brews a pot of coffee starting with only a flame. The alcohol burner heats water inside a copper kettle, sending it through a pipette. From there, the hot water is introduced to ground coffee inside a brewing chamber. What brings the system home, however, is the fact that the flame is automatically extinguished as a counterbalance provides the action to lower a snuffer onto the flame as the copper kettle rises because of its decreased weight.

The elegant contraption continues from there, completing the brewing process because the pressure variance created by the cooling coffee sends the final brew back to the kettle. A filter installed in the pipette even holds back the grounds as the liquid makes its return journey. Constructed of brass, solid copper, and lead crystal all on a mahogany base, the fanciful gadget is a working example that reaches back in time no matter what it happens to be named.

Sure, the door is where all the fun easy-access items such as condiments reside, but there is another side to the story: the outside.

As a wide-open plain, the outside of the refrigerator door is a perfect area for personalization. Long the center for communication, refrigerators have more recently upped the ante by including Wi-Fi-enabled touch screens (such as in the new Samsung line). However, sometimes all that is needed is a low-tech solution.

Reminiscent of old-timey calculator or clock displays, the ThinkGeek LED Digit Magnets are a refrigerator door's best friend no matter when it was made. The fun fridge magnets come in a set of 566 pieces, allowing for plenty of custom combinations of letters and numbers that can spell out messages of any kind. And don't forget, they are magnetic; they might not hold atablet in place, but they would make a mighty nice neon green frame for the kids' artwork.

Browning creates flavor. It is a simple statement, but one with deep-toned implications. The effect is what is called the Maillard reaction and it is what occurs when amino acids and sugars get together with a heat source. The resulting party creates new flavor compounds, and that all equals delicious. Achieving this deliciousness is as easy as getting out a saut pan. Or in this case, the multicooker.

The West Bend 82011 Pressure Cooker may be appropriately named, but pressure cooking is only one of its capabilities. The versatile countertop appliance is really a multicooker that combines five appliances in one. In addition to the pressure cooker setting, the machine can also be operated as a slow cooker, a rice cooker, and a steamer. And when the browning function is employed, possibilities increase; it can be used to build flavor or just simply saut some vegetables.

The encloseable device uses a simple push-button interface to supply cooking options. An integrated timer makes quick work of setup and allows for worry-free operation. It doesn't take much to add flavor to food; fat usually does the trick. However as delicious as it may be, one doesn't necessarily always want to add bacon to every meal. Luckily, flavor can be incorporated into food via many other methods. Sauces, marinades, herbs, and spices can be introduced to veggies and proteins by slathering, bathing, basting, stewing, or even injecting them. And there is always room for one more method.

The latest gadget to come along and promise flavor maximization and fat minimization is the T-Fal Balanced Living GC420852 Curved Grill. Featuring a design similar to other sloped clamshell-type indoor grills, the countertop appliance doubles down by having the grill plates curve in two directions. Familiar in concept to anyone who has ever used a slanted indoor grill, there is one area in this case where the geometry provides an interesting angle.

The spine of the curvature allows for what the manufacturer calls a flavor infusing compartment. Designed to baste food as it cooks, the unique channel offers an interesting opportunity in that it can be filled with practically anything. (Think beer-can chicken without the can or the charcoal grill.) Considering its somewhat surprising design, it is probably safe to say that other indoor grills may have just been thrown a curve.

Haier future-fridge mixes drinks, gives us chills

BERLIN--Fast forward 10 years and we'll all own fridges like the one shown above. Fast forward another 10 years and we'll all be working for the fridge shown above, slaving away in the ice mines to appease our chilly overlord.

Haier's semi-transparent concept fridge is one of the more exotic things on show at the IFA tech trade show here in Berlin. I've been hands-on with the "Minority Report"-esque technology, so read on for everything you need to know.

The first thing you'll notice is that front of the fridge has a large, dark screen through which you can -- if you squint -- make out your food. That's because this fridge has a semi-transparent display, meaning you can both see what's onscreen, and make out objects behind it.

When you stick a new item in the fridge you tap its location on the glass, which lets you name the item, entering it into the fridge's database.

It can do some interesting things with that database, notably recommending cocktail recipes. With the orange, Sprite, and vodka residing in the fridge, the chilled-out kitchen kingpin suggested mixing up a blue lagoon. Don't mind if I do! To stop you from poisoning yourself, the fridge also displays use-by dates for the food you've got stored.

Best of all, the fridge can recommend cocktails based on what you've got stored inside. Bottoms up! (Click to enlarge.)

There was a slightly more ominous feature on show too. Tapping over an item in the fridge (a can of Coke in this case) gave you the option to play an ad, opening up the possibility of our household appliances blaring commercials at us all day long. I'd rather toil in the ice mine (note to future robot overlords: I would not rather toil in the ice mine).

You'd think sticking a whopping great screen on a fridge isn't particularly good for the environment, but I spoke to a member of Haier's team who explained that the fridge isn't too much of an affront to mother nature.

That's because you don't need to open it to see what's inside, so the fridge doesn't need to burn energy cooling itself down after each opening.

I asked when the fridge would be going on sale, but was told it's still a concept, with currently no hint that the model I saw would ever make it into stories. Dismaying news, but I'm confident that transparent touch screens have a lot to offer, so it's still worth putting those pennies aside.

The semi-transparent tech is reminiscent of the extremely impressive Samsung Smart Window that took my breath away when I saw it earlier this year.

Baking can be a furious endeavor. Throw a cook into a fully stocked kitchen with a set of measuring tools and anything can happen. That doesn't mean everything has to happen, though. Any chef could live without the spills and the messes that inevitably occur from trying to use something that was designed for another purpose. Worse yet is when a commonly used item gets in the way.

Baking scales, like any other piece of kitchen equipment, are only as useful as far as they can be used. Sounds simple enough, but all too often utility is lost due to some overlooked feature. Designed to be used with oversize mixing bowls, as well as everything in between, the Caso Baking Scale gives cooks an eye-level view as to what is going on.

A display that allows you to clearly see the readout may seem like an unwieldy thing to store, but the scale solves this problem by folding for storage. In the closed position, the legs that serve to elevate the display panel fold flat, giving the scale overall dimensions of 10.5 inches by 6.5 inches with a height of only 0.75 inch. With it being easy to use and easy to store, the scale saves time and space, offering more than meets the eye.
